After years of research and development, Suitable Technologies is proud to introduce Beam!
Beam, our new remote presence system (RPS), enables individuals to travel instantly to remote locations, using videoconferencing on a mobile platform. The real, physical sense of presence from Beam will make professionals in many fields more productive and efficient, while also eliminating travel costs.
The Beam Remote Presence System (RPS) consists of three components:
- Beam Remote Presence Device (RPD)
- Beam Client Software (Client)
- Beam Docking Station (Dock)
The “pilot” of a Beam RPD uses the RPD to communicate with “locals” at a work setting.
The Beam RPD is your physical presence in the world. It stands 62” tall, weighs 95 pounds, and has a 17" screen, enabling the pilot’s face to be seen at human size. The battery can power the Beam RPD for up to eight hours of active use and its motors can reach human walking speed (1.5 meters per second). Robust and seamless wireless connectivity is provided by two dual-band (2.4/5 GHz) wireless radios and proprietary software which can smoothly handle transitions between access points. The Beam RPD also has two high definition cameras to provide a 170 degree wide field of view, both vertically and horizontally; a six-microphone beam forming array for human-like audio performance, background noise reduction, and echo cancellation; a sophisticated speaker system in order to be heard in noisy environments; and LED lamps to enable operation in low light.
The Beam Client connects to the Beam RPD and provides integrated controls for driving, video, and audio. The client is available for download as an installer on both Windows 7 and Mac OS X.
Finally, the Beam Dock charges the RPD's battery. The pilot maneuvers the RPD directly into the dock without any local intervention to connect to the power source.
As the closest thing to teleportation that exists today, Beam is aimed at professionals who work remotely or travel frequently. And with the growth of distributed teams and organizations, providing instant connections and presence between locations is increasingly valuable.
Many of you know that we’ve been hard at work on Beam for a long time, and got our start years ago at Willow Garage. Our research there demonstrated the potential for this technology, but also showed how much it needed to be improved and refined. Reliable connectivity, high-quality audio and video, and a simple user interface for the Beam pilot are key components to the product we are introducing today.
We hope to see you Beaming soon!
